June 22, 2026 Southern El Paso County Hail Storm — Fountain, Security-Widefield, Ellicott & Yoder Damage Report
NWS Pueblo confirmed 2″ hail and 70 MPH wind gusts across southern El Paso County on the afternoon of June 22, 2026 — Fountain, Security-Widefield, south Colorado Springs, Hanover, Ellicott and Yoder. Here's the verified footprint and what to do in the next 48 hours.
Hail this size (1″+) damages asphalt shingles even when nothing looks wrong from the ground. If you're in one of the areas below, get a free roof-level inspection within 7–14 days while the damage is clearly storm-dated.
Where the June 22, 2026 storm hit hardest
| Area | Peak hail | ZIP codes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fountain | 2.00" (hen egg) | 80817 | Inside the NWS Pueblo severe thunderstorm warning polygon. 2″ hail at the leading edge of the cell — shingle bruising is essentially guaranteed on any roof older than 5 years. |
| Security-Widefield | 1.75"–2.00" | 80911, 80925 | Direct line of the storm track between Fountain and Hanover. Detached garages, sheds, fencing and HVAC condenser fins should all be documented in addition to the roof. |
| South Colorado Springs (Fountain Blvd corridor) | 1.50"–2.00" | 80911, 80916, 80925 | Neighborhoods south of Fountain Blvd and along Powers south of Mesa Ridge caught the northern edge of the warning polygon. Skylights and ridge vents are the first failure points at this hail size. |
| Hanover / Ellicott corridor | 2.00" (hen egg) | 80808, 80929 | Heaviest core tracked over open acreage here. Barns, equipment sheds, metal outbuildings and stock tanks are routinely left off insurance scopes — document every structure on the property, not just the house. |
| Yoder / Pueblo County line | 1.75"+ | 80864 | Tail end of the warning polygon as the cell tracked southeast. Acreage owners in 80864 should walk the property for hail bruises on siding, window screens and outbuildings before sunset. |

What happened
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Pueblo for southern El Paso County until 4:15 PM on Monday, June 22, 2026. NWS Pueblo flagged the cell as containing wind gusts to 70 MPH and two-inch sized hail — the largest hail size the office had logged in the county this season.
The warning polygon covered the southern half of the county: from near Fountain southeast across Security-Widefield, Hanover, and out to areas south of Ellicott and Yoder near the Pueblo County line. South Colorado Springs neighborhoods on the south side of Fountain Boulevard and along the 80911/80916/80925 corridor were inside the impact zone.
Two-inch hail is the threshold where damage is no longer subtle. Asphalt-shingle roofs sustain visible bruising, soft-metal vents and flashings dent, vehicle hoods crater, and even impact-resistant Class 4 shingles can take a hit at this size. From the ground, a roof can still look intact — but on the roof, an inspector can count hundreds of fresh bruises that will fail within 1–3 years. By then the storm date is too old to file a clean insurance claim.
If you live in Fountain, Security-Widefield, south Colorado Springs, Hanover, Ellicott or Yoder, the most important move this week is a free roof-level inspection while the damage is fresh and clearly dated to June 22. We are dispatching crews to the Fountain → Security-Widefield → Hanover corridor first thing tomorrow morning.

What to do in the 48 hours after a hail storm
- Step 1
Document everything now
Take date-stamped phone photos of any visible damage — dented gutters, downspouts, window screens, AC fins, vehicles, patio furniture. These ground-level photos timestamp the storm for your claim.
- Step 2
Don't sign anything yet
Out-of-state storm-chasers flood Colorado after every hail event. Don't sign a contract, AOB (assignment of benefits), or 'inspection authorization' with anyone you haven't vetted.
- Step 3
Get a roof-level inspection
Hail damage on shingles is rarely visible from the ground — the asphalt mat under the granules takes the impact. A free roof-level inspection takes 30 minutes and gives you a clear answer.
- Step 4
File the claim with documentation in hand
Don't file blind. We'll meet your adjuster on the roof, share our photo report, and make sure every covered item (roof, gutters, screens, paint, fence) ends up on the scope.
- Step 5
Repair or replace with a Colorado-local contractor
Storm-chasers disappear in October. A local contractor honors the workmanship warranty in 5, 10, 20 years when you need it. We've been Colorado-based since 2018.

Hail damage — homeowner questions
I think my roof might be damaged — what should I do in the next 48 hours?
Take ground-level photos of any visible damage (downspouts, gutters, screens, vehicles), don't sign anything yet, and book a free inspection. We document hits with date-stamped photos so the insurance timeline is on your side.
How long do I have to file a hail claim in Colorado?
Most carriers give you one year from the date of loss, but the practical window is much shorter. Adjusters scrutinize claims filed more than 60–90 days after a storm. The sooner you document, the cleaner the claim.
Will filing a hail claim raise my premiums?
In Colorado, hail is a non-rate-impacting weather claim for most carriers — meaning a single hail claim usually does not raise your individual premium. Statewide rate increases happen regardless of whether you file.
My roof looks fine from the ground. Could it still be damaged?
Yes — and this is the most common mistake we see. Hail bruises the asphalt mat beneath the granules. From the ground it looks fine; from the roof you can see hundreds of soft spots that will fail within 1–3 years. Always get a roof-level inspection after a 1"+ event.
Should I sign with the first roofer who knocks on my door?
No. Storm-chasers from out of state flood Colorado after every major hail event. Verify the contractor is local, licensed, BBB-accredited, and has been in business at least 5 years. Jax Roofing has been Colorado-based since 2018 and is BBB A+ rated.
