Are Class 4 Shingles Worth It in Colorado?

In most of the Front Range the premium discount pays for the upgrade in four to six years. On the Palmer Divide, it's closer to three.

The short version

  • Class 4 is the top rating in the UL 2218 steel-ball impact test.
  • Most Colorado carriers give a 20–30% discount on the wind/hail portion of your premium.
  • The upgrade typically adds $1,500–$3,500 to a replacement.
  • Class 4 does not make a roof hail-proof — it makes it far less likely that one storm totals it.

What the rating actually measures

UL 2218 drops a two-inch steel ball from twenty feet onto the shingle, twice in the same spot. If the mat doesn't crack, the shingle earns Class 4 — the highest of four classes. FM 4473 uses ice balls and tests the same threshold.

That's a laboratory proxy for real hail, not a guarantee. A four-inch stone falling at 100 mph will damage anything. What Class 4 changes is the outcome of the storms that happen most often in Colorado: the one-to-two-inch events that total a standard three-tab roof and leave an impact-resistant roof serviceable.

The Colorado discount math

Colorado carriers price hail into your premium heavily, and nearly all of them offer an impact-resistant roof credit. In practice we see 20–30% off the wind/hail component, which on a typical Colorado Springs policy is a few hundred dollars a year.

  • Upgrade cost on a typical replacement: $1,500–$3,500.
  • Typical annual premium savings: $300–$700 depending on carrier and dwelling value.
  • Typical payback: 4–6 years across the Springs, 3–5 years in Monument, Black Forest, and the Tri-Lakes.
  • Manufacturer impact warranties usually run the life of the shingle.

When the insurance company pays for it

If your roof is being replaced through an approved hail claim, the carrier pays the like-kind-and-quality cost of your existing roof. The Class 4 upgrade is the difference between that and the impact-resistant product — often the cheapest time you will ever be able to buy it.

We quote both numbers side by side on every claim so you can see exactly what the upgrade costs out of pocket, not a bundled total.

Which products we install

We're a certified installer for GAF, Atlas, Malarkey, Owens Corning, and Pella, which means we can put a Class 4 product from any of them on your home and register the full manufacturer warranty. Which one is right depends on your HOA's approved color list, your exposure, and whether you want a polymer-modified or SBS-modified mat.

Common questions

Will my insurance company require Class 4 in Colorado?

Requirement is rare, but a growing number of carriers now condition renewal in high-hail zips on an impact-resistant roof. Ask your agent before your next renewal.

Do I have to tell my insurer I upgraded?

Yes — the discount is not automatic. Send your agent the manufacturer certificate and the completion invoice; we provide both.

Does Class 4 stop all hail damage?

No. It dramatically reduces mat fracture in common one-to-two-inch storms, but very large hail can still cause claimable damage.
